Web hosting is a service that provides the infrastructure and connectivity necessary for websites to be seen on the internet. Hundreds of different web hosts exist, each creating unique environments to suit distinct digital requirements and preferences. The types of web hosting services range from specialized platforms that streamline website building to managed server environments designed for maximum uptime and performance.
The type of web hosting you choose should largely be determined by your site’s traffic and resource demands. For example, shared hosting is affordable and easy to use for small websites, while Dedicated Servers provide the most resources for high- traffic sites with complex configurations. VPS hosting is a middle ground, offering more control than Shared Servers but less than Dedicated Servers. Cloud hosting, meanwhile, offers scalability by distributing server resources dynamically across a network of interconnected servers.
Managed hosting is a form of web hosting that provides hardware, operating systems, and standardised applications to allow website owners to focus their efforts on content. By handling system updates, server monitoring and management, troubleshooting, and other time-consuming tasks, managed hosting enables website owners to save both time and money.
When users enter a domain name into their browser, the browser sends a request to a Domain Name System (DNS) server to translate it into an IP address. The IP address then identifies the location of the web hosting server where the website is stored. The server processes the request and retrieves the HTML files, images, videos, scripts, and other data that make up the website. It then transmits the files to the browser over the internet for viewing.
In addition to storing and serving website files, some web hosting providers also offer database support, allowing website owners to store, update, and retrieve information using a user-friendly interface. Others offer support for content management systems (CMS), enabling websites to create, edit, and publish digital content without technical expertise.
Finally, some web hosting services also allow website owners to host their own servers, providing full ownership and control over the infrastructure that houses their online presence. This is referred to as colocation hosting, and it differs from other web hosting options because it doesn’t require the purchase of additional equipment for server operation.
Instead, it allows website owners to house their own servers within a secure operational environment provided by a data center. This gives them a high level of autonomy over the hardware and software they use to host their sites, while also benefiting from access to premium bandwidth, security, and customer support.
